Dr. Antonis Koutsonas was born and raised in Athens, Greece.

After graduating from the German School of Athens (german Abitur, Greek Apolytirion) in 2001, he studied medicine in the University School of Medicine in Aachen, Germany.

Dr. Koutsonas then completed his residency at the Department of Ophthalmology in the RWTH Aachen University, where he also earned his doctorate in medicine in 2011.

Under the guidance of the acknowledged vitreoretinal surgeon Prof. Peter Walter he specialized in the clinical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases. He also performs cataract surgery and minor eyelid procedures.

Dr. Koutsonas has various publications in peer-reviewed journals. His research areas of interest are glaucoma, electrophysiology and medical/surgical retina.

He was for several years deputy head of the Electrophysiological Laboratory in the Dept. of Ophthalmology, RWTH Aachen University, Germany and also Vice-speaker of the Center for Rare Retinopathies, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. He furthermore managed and participated in many multicenter clinical trials.

Dr. Koutsonas is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist and a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBOphth).
